The Present Moment: Where I Found the Power to Change

I used to live everywhere but now—stuck in regret about the past or anxiety about the future. My mind would replay old mistakes on loop or spiral into "what ifs" that hadn't even happened yet.
It was exhausting. And it kept me from actually living.
Learning to anchor myself in the present moment was one of the most powerful shifts I've ever made. Not because it made life perfect, but because it gave me back my power.
Why I was always somewhere else
My mind had been trained to time-travel. Worrying felt productive. Replaying the past felt like I was learning something. But really, I was just avoiding the only place where change can actually happen: right here, right now.
The past is done. The future isn't real yet. The present moment is the only place I can actually do anything.
How I learned to stay present
It didn't come naturally. I had to practise—over and over. Here's what helped:
- Breath as an anchor – When my mind started spiralling, I'd take three slow breaths. It sounds simple, but it works. It brings me back.
- Noticing my senses – What can I see, hear, feel right now? Grounding in the physical pulls me out of my head.
- Letting go of the story – I started catching myself mid-narrative and asking, "Is this helping me right now?"
What presence gave me
When I stopped running from the present, I found clarity. I found calm. I found the ability to respond instead of react.
The present moment isn't always comfortable. But it's real. And it's where I found the power to change—not by escaping, but by being fully here.
Now, when I catch myself drifting, I gently come back. Because this moment is the only one I've got.
